Conventional quality management systems can be frustrating for designers. Simplistic standardised structures invariably inhibit the creativity and innovation that studios strive to cultivate. Despite this the commercial world puts pressure on practices to conform to standardised process approaches to qualify for bids.   The most common standards are quality standard ISO 9001:2008, sustainability standard ISO 14001:2004 and Occupational Health and Safety standard OHSAS 18001:2007. Enigma QPM has developed a successful approach to supporting design consultants in developing their processes in a manner that satisfies the requirements of these standards for quality and sustainability, but supports innovative learning and organisational development without bureaucracy. The key is to achieve a balance between innovation within particular studios and projects and standardisation of desired procedures across a practice.
